About
Ben Shearin is a creative producer, storyteller and camera operator with fifteen years in unscripted and documentary television.
He started as a production assistant on summer jobs at Discovery, A&E and MTV, and studied Film and New Media at the University of California, Santa Barbara, graduating with Honors and Distinction in the Major. In his senior year he won a competitive internship at Fox 2000 Pictures, working on 27 Dresses, Marley & Me and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
His first major credit was Deadliest Catch, where he was embedded with Coast Guard Search and Rescue units and on the decks of crab boats in the Bering Sea. The work earned four consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Cinematography, from 2011 through 2014, as part of the cinematography team, and a Producer of the Year Award in Non-Fiction Television from the Producers Guild of America in 2011.
Since then he has produced, filmed and written for History, National Geographic, NBCUniversal, Spike TV, truTV, Discovery, A&E and Hulu. He has held Supervising Producer credits on Race to Survive: New Zealand, Expedition Unknown, Bering Sea Gold and Homestead Rescue, and worked with Mark Hamill in 2016 and Morgan Freeman in 2018.
His branded and client work includes a documentary series for Carnival Cruise Lines through the agency Digital Kitchen, and a branded series for the British Columbia Fishermen's Association currently in production.
He builds and directs producer teams and owns projects from concept and format through post and delivery, across long-form, mid-form and short-form. He manages outside production partners, agencies, crews and vendors end to end, including scopes, budgets, contracting and brand approval. His current work is YouTube-first, developed, shot and cut in-house.
He lives in Thousand Oaks, California.
